    This colorful songster is found in a variety of habitats including backyards, woodlands, and streamside thickets.  Originally a bird of the Southeast, it has expanded its range northward in the last 100 years and is now common throughout the eastern U.S. and parts of eastern Canada.  unlike most species of birds, both male and females sing.  Northern Cardinals are nonmigratory and are primarily seedeaters but they also eat insects, betties, flowers, leaf buds, and fruit.
